CORNIEHAUGH & MAINS OF MAYEN

Location

Seven miles downriver from Huntly near the village of Rothiemay.

Summary

5 year catch average - 150 salmon; 45 sea trout
2004 catch - 200 salmon; 30 sea trout
2 miles of double bank with 16 named pools
Six rod beat split into left and right banks
A full time ghillie is provided.
Day rods are usually available in the Spring for salmon and brown trout. Good vehicle access to all three fishing huts which have tea and coffee facilities.

The Fishing

This is a six rod beat and is normally fished on a rotational basis.
Thigh waders are adequte since most of the fishing is done from the bank on this beat.
Fly rods: from 8'-9'for brown trout and 10'in(low water)to 15'(in high water) for salmon are required.
Fly sizes: from about 2" Waddington in the early part of the year down to size 12's low water during the summer.
Fly fishing only from 1st May - spinning is permitted from February to the end of May and at the discretion of the ghillie in high and coloured water.
Worming is only permitted for beginners aged 16 years and under.
In the main part of the season the beat is usually let to single parties when upto 6 rods may be fished.

The Fish

The salmon runs starts in March.
March, April and May are best for spring fishing for salmon. June, July and August are best for sea trout fishing.
Grilse runs begin in June and carry on through to September. The salmon summer runs are usually from July to the end of October.
Brown trout fishing is at its best from the start of the season(March)until May and then there are evening rises throughout the summer.
